Most scholars use the appellate “boss” as opposed to “giant” to indicate an oversized monster with a degree of sentience that is unusual for its species.

Hence, Boss Shark, Boss Zombie and so forth — all monsters which are usually of low- to animal-level intelligence, but are somehow more cunning or crafty than their origins would suggest.

Boss Mosquito

The Boss Mosquito is a good example. Mosquitoes are generally minute and only slightly dangerous creatures, with no more sign of intelligence than the biological imperative to seek food.

A Boss Mosquito however, exhibits a fundamental level of intelligence that outstrips the normal insect.

So not only is its size greater than normal, but fights with a measure of skill that ordinarily would not be expected from a common mosquito.

That immense size is its true advantage though. Its dimensions trigger a Fear reaction in susceptible creatures, making its natural toughness and defenses a little more effective.

Oddly enough, that size works against it as well. The Boss Mosquito has little in the way of natural (or magical, for that matter) defenses, meaning it is easy to hit.

And that is reflected in a low Guard rating. It may be tough, and it may hit hard, but it’s not hard to hit … at all.
